Verre borosilicate soufflé, lingot d’or suisse d’un gramme réduit en poudre, 2 grammes de mercure

Avec Mercury makes Mad, j’ai cherché à matérialiser le danger associé à l’utilisation du mercure dans l’extraction de l’or. Un lingot d’or d’un gramme, fabriqué en Suisse, a été réduit en poudre puis introduit dans un tube en verre borosilicaté avec deux grammes de mercure. Des contraintes techniques ont empêché la réalisation d’un tube entièrement scellé. Par ailleurs, le mercure ne doit pas être chauffé, au risque de produire des vapeurs extrêmement toxiques. Le technicien a ainsi reproduit en toute connaissance de cause une opération aujourd’hui totalement interdite, qui a historiquement affecté de nombreux verriers spécialisés dans la production de thermomètres et de tubes fluorescents. Ici, l’or reste invisible, amalgamé au mercure. Porter le bracelet ou extraire l’or implique un risque de contamination et d’empoisonnement. Sa valeur spéculative est annulée, sa fonction iconique désactivée.

Blown borosilicate glass, 1‑gram Swiss gold bar reduced to powder, 2 grams of mercury

With Mercury makes Mad I sought to materialize the danger associated with the use of mercury in gold extraction. One-gram gold bar, made in Switzerland, was ground into powder and inserted into the borosilicate glass tube with two grams of mercury. Technical constraints prevented the creation of a fully sealed tube. Moreover, the mercury must not be heated, under risk of producing extremely toxic vapors. The technician thus knowingly reproduced an operation that is now completely prohibited, which historically affected many glassblowers specialized in the production of thermometers and fluorescent tubes. Here the gold remains invisible, amalgamated with the mercury. Wearing the bracelet or extracting the gold entails a risk of contaminatoin and poisoning. Its speculative value is nullified, its iconic function disabled.
