Rien n’est trop beau – 2024-26

Rien n’est trop beau pour le peuple, 2024-2026

A series of necklaces composed of partially burned cultured pearls and antique silver beads.
The title borrows from a well-known rhetorical formula dating from the late eighteenth century. Pearls, the quintessential bourgeois symbol, become the site of a symbolic act of destruction. The destruction enacted in this series also challenges essentialist gender norms, particularly the traditional association of women with gentleness and men with violence. The origin of this work originates in an encounter with a pearl dealer in Switzerland, who argued that pearls should not be worn by men.
